Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, recently announced the new lockdown rules for level 1 under the Covid lockdown regarding events like sports, concerts, live events and movie theatres. Scorpion Legal Protection discusses the three things you need to know about the changes.
Are international sports allowed again?
Yes, but you still can’t attend any games as a spectator according to level 1 rules for sports in South Africa. Only countries with low or medium Covid-19 infection transmission rates are allowed to participate.
The sporting bodies must comply with all regulations, including that all the necessary health and safety measures are in place before they are allowed to resume sporting events. This goes for both professional and non-professional sports organisations. Every participant must be Covid tested if they are in professional sport, and screened in non-professional sport.
Sport bodies must ensure every person in the travelling team provides a negative Covid-19 test result that has been obtained no more than 72 hours before the date of travel. If a person in the travelling team can’t produce a negative Covid-19 test result, that person must be quarantined at his or her own cost.
Can I go to a concert?
Yes. Music events and live performances are limited to 250 people or less for indoor gatherings, and 500 people or less for outdoor gatherings. The venue is also still not allowed to exceed 50% capacity, and anyone who attends the event must social distance (at least 1.5m from each other) and follow other approved Covid-19 protocols like wearing a mask or cloth that covers the mouth and nose at all times and washing hands frequently. The venue itself must also be cleaned and sanitised after use.
Are movies open?
Yes, but they are limited to 50% capacity. The same Covid-19 rules apply for movie theatres as for all social gatherings and events – social distancing of at least 1.5m between people, wearing a mask or cloth that covers the mouth and nose at all times and sanitising. Venues must also be cleaned and sanitised after each use.
