Our Legal Content Team consists of experienced legal professionals with backgrounds across multiple areas of law. Every article, guide and published response is carefully developed and reviewed to ensure it is legally accurate, aligned with current legislation, and consistent with regulatory standards.

This structured review process ensures that the information we provide is credible, compliant and trustworthy — giving the public reliable legal insight grounded in real legal expertise.


Zakiya Ally

Zakiya holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Law) and an LLB from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and is an Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa.

With nine years’ legal experience and over a decade in the financial services industry, Zakiya plays a key role in ensuring that legal content, client guidance and operational processes accurately reflect South African law and regulatory standards.

Zakiya is an active contributor to consumer legal education and has authored and contributed to numerous legal rights articles for Scorpion over the years. Her work includes regular contributions to The Defender, Daily Sun's Legal Rights page, which Scorpion sponsored.

Her writing focuses on breaking down complex legal principles into clear, practical and accessible guidance, empowering consumers to understand, protect and confidently exercise their rights. She also reviews and approves legal education content across digital and social media platforms, ensuring that all published material remains accurate, compliant and aligned with best practice.


Magdalene George

Qualification: LLB

Precious Makhatini

Precious holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Law) from University of South Africa which provides her with a strong foundation in legal principles and the practical application of law within regulated environments.

Her work sits at the intersection of law, communication and consumer engagement. With both legal training and digital strategy expertise, Precious specialises in translating complex legal and insurance concepts into clear, practical guidance that resonates with everyday South Africans.

She actively writes and contributes to legal education content and plays an important role in reviewing material for clarity, accuracy and alignment with policy terms and regulatory standards. Her understanding of the real-life challenges consumers face — from labour disputes to contractual issues — ensures that the content she develops is accessible, compliant and empathetic, while remaining legally sound.


Peter-John Mason

Peter-John Mason holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) (cum laude) and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of the Witwatersrand, and has completed a Management Development (MDP) qualification through the University of Manchester. He is a registered Key Individual with the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA).

He oversees the Legal Content Team and is responsible for ensuring that all legal content published by Scorpion is accurate, clear and aligned with South African law and regulatory standards. In addition to his oversight role, he actively writes and contributes to legal education content, including articles and features for The Sting, Scorpion’s member newsletter.

Under his leadership, Scorpion’s digital platforms and member communications have developed into credible sources of consumer legal education within the insurance sector, with structured legal and compliance review processes underpinning all published material.


Junaisha Thanjappen

Qualification: LLB

Loraine Viljoen

Loraine holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Rand Afrikaans University (now the University of Johannesburg), a Bachelor of Commerce (Short-Term Insurance) (cum laude), and a Diploma in Compliance Management (cum laude). She is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa and a non-practising member of the Legal Practice Council.

With over 20 years of legal experience, her combined background as an admitted attorney and compliance executive strengthens the credibility, accuracy and integrity of consumer-facing communication. She reviews and vets legal education materials and policy-related content to ensure they accurately reflect South African law, regulatory requirements, and industry standards.

Her oversight helps ensure that published content clearly explains individuals’ legal rights, obligations and protections within the South African legal framework, while remaining compliant and aligned with best practice.
