Gender inequality is still an issue in the South African workplace. What is your take on things?
Our history is full of brave women who fought for our rights, and we owe it to them to make full use of what we've achieved. Empowerment lies in knowing your rights, and helping others to know theirs. As far as gender equality goes, South Africa still has a long way to go. The African Gender Development Index (AGDI) study found that more girls finish school and enter institutions of higher learning, but when it comes to being employed, more men are in paying jobs, in high paying jobs and in managerial or decision-making positions than women. A new report by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) found South African women are consistently paid less than men, and there is no industry where they are paid more than men. Women also still bear the brunt of gender-based violence and other related atrocities.
But the report also says that there are many companies who have adopted a long-term view to ensure that diversity and in particular, gender pay inequality, is addressed. There are also organisations like the Commission for Gender Equality that are fighting to fix things in our country every day. The policies and legislation are in place, we just need to help make them a reality.
